ACGME-accredited 1 year Program!
The Morristown Medical Center (MMC) Department of Emergency Medicine and Atlantic Mobile Health (AMH) are a please to offer a one-year Emergency Medical Services (EMS) fellowship training program. The program is ACGME accredited and is designed to prepare fellows who graduates to pass the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) EMS board exam and to become the future leaders in EMS. MMC and AMH have been leaders in EMS at the regional, state, and local levels for decades.
Through an EMS fellowship curriculum including didactic time, administrative mentoring, MICU/SCTU/Air experience, and a variety of other EMS activities, fellows gain experience in the practice of clinical and operational prehospital care in addition to becoming adept at the administrative side of medical direction.
This fellowship offers a variety of pre-hospital experiences with the primary site being AMH. AMH is a comprehensive organization serving 8 Hospitals and over 500 health care facilities in 24 counties of New Jersey. AMH’s services include an Air Medical Program, Ground Emergency and Medical Transport, a Courier and Transportation Division, a Patient Transfer Center, a comprehensive dispatch center, and a Training Center. AMH transports over 96,000 patients annually with a growing fleet of 165 vehicles.
AMH’s services includes pre-hospital care through its 28 bases with 2 Air Medical Units providing critical care transport of the sick and injured from scene and inter-facility responses, 6 Special Care Transport Units providing critical care transport of the sick and injured during inter-facility transfers, 12 Mobile Intensive Care Units providing advanced life support care from scene responses, 21 Emergency Medical units providing basic life support care from scene responses, Medical transportation providing basic life support transportation during inter-facility transfers as well as patient transports for varying appointments. An expanding Mobile Integrated Health program is providing help and care to discharged patients with additional needs and guidance in an effort to decrease hospital readmission rates. In addition, AMH provides courier services between all Atlantic Health System facilities on a 24-hour basis.
The Patient Transfer Center (PTC) coordinates the inter-facility transfers within Atlantic Health System, other regional facilities and Cooper Medical Center in Trenton. The PTC coordinates more than 20,000 cases annually. The PTC is also the conduit between the field paramedics and the hospital Stroke and STEMI alerts thereby decreasing the time it takes from onset of symptoms to definitive critical care. Furthermore, the PTC facilitates consultations between doctors at our affiliated non-tertiary care facilities and specialists at either Morristown Medical Center or other appropriate facilities. The field paramedic and specialty consultations account for over 6,000 cases annually.
The Training Center coordinates the basic and continuing education/training of Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). It provides the continuing education and yearly competency training for Paramedics and Critical Care Nurses. The Training Center provides training for the entire Atlantic Health System for Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). In addition to training the Atlantic Health System employees it also provides a wide-ranging selection of courses for local and municipal emergency medical services. More the 10,000 persons are trained annually through the AMH Training Center.
In addition to the Medical Director, AMH has 3 Associate Medical Directors who have emergency medicine and pediatric expertise. The fellow will join this team as an Assistant Medical Director. AMH and the MMC ED/residency are closely integrated from both an academic and clinical perspective. AMH medical directors, EMS fellows, and our ED attending/resident staff provide direct medical command and oversight. AMH also provides Medical Command/Oversight capabilities to 66 local squads/fire departments and 9 local law enforcement agencies.
Part of this medical oversight includes a Physician Response Vehicle (Delta1) provided specifically for the Fellow(s) and is maintained by AMH. This allows us to respond to and provide direct medical oversight to a wide variety of pre-hospital situations. This vehicle is supplied with turnout gear, bleeding control supplies, AED, oxygen and airway equipment. In addition, we are in the process of purchasing a dedicated LUCAS® device and hand-held ultrasound for this vehicle.
